Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 107 : August, 1913 (Classic Reprint)

Description

Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 107: August, 1913 SO far as the amount is concerned, the same rule should be followed here as is indicated in the Opium stage in malignant and incurable diseases. Should the dose be too rapidly increased, un der the latter conditions, or carried to too great an extent, the time is liable to come when the drug ceases to give relief and the patient is indeed in a pitiable state. Her sheet-anchor is gone. Her nervous system may be demoralized by the drug and the disease, and the ingenuity of the medical attendants is taxed to the utmost to give the relief so desirable in these distressing cases. Partial relief to suffering, as can usually be secured with moderate doses of the opiate, is preferable to entire relief for a time at the expense of large and increasing doses that can not be long continued. In the class of cases under consideration in this paper, large doses of opium are not a tonic and would eventually do more harm than good. The writer can not insist too strongly upon this point. It is the mild, tonic effects that are desired, and not the stronger, variable, stimulating effects, that are liable to be followed by a reaction that defeats the Objects of the method. Properly managed, under the supervision of a discreet physician, the drug can be used indefinitely with benefit. The stomach and bowels are not disturbed to any extent. Vitality is maintained. The nervous system is steadied and supported, and life is better worth living not only for the patient, but for all within the sphere Of his in uence. Charlaine Harris,Toni L. P. Kelner: Death's Excellent Vacation

Death's Excellent Vacation

Description

A selection of new and original tales of Paranormal R&R by some of the most popular writers in the Urban Fantasy genre! It includes a new Sookie Stackhouse (the series which inspired HBO's TRUEBLOOD) story by Charlaine Harris, as well as short fiction by: Jeff Abbott; L.A. Banks; Jeaniene Frost; Christopher Golden; Chris Grabenstein; Toni L.P. Kelner; Katie MacAlister; A. Lee Martinez; Sharan Newman; Lilith Saintcrow; Sarah Smith and Daniel Stashower

Now that we've learned the origin of the all-new Nova, there's only one thing standing between Sam Alexander and being an Avenger...he needs to ask his mom. Zeb Wells ("Robot Chicken") and Paco Medina (Ultimate X-Men) continue the story of Marvel's newest, least experienced hero, as he takes on the Superior Spider-Man and encounters the madness that is Infinity! But can Nova handle his first taste of the power of a mad cosmic god? Sam may be well out of his depth, but he's about to get backup from some allies of the original Nova: that's right, members of the fan-favorite New Warriors! Will Sam help them put their team back together? Even in the quiet countryside he can find no peace... These extraordinary memoirs give us a rare view into what the Arab-Israeli conflict has meant for one Palestinian family over the Death's Excellent Vacation ebook pdf generations. Nusseibeh also interweaves his own story with that of the Palestinians as a people, always speaking his mind, and apportioning blame where he feels it due. Hated by extremists on both sides, his is a rare voice. "This autobiography' carries the passion that might embolden ordinary Israelis and Palestinians to bypass the politicians and establish the peace that all but the armoured men desperately want." The Independent "Nusseibeh's formidable achievement' leaves a drop of despair, because of how exceptional it is." New York Times

Brett L. Walker: A Concise History of Japan

A Concise History of Japan

Description

To this day, Japan's modern ascendancy challenges many assumptions about world history, particularly theories regarding the rise of the west and why the modern world looks the way it does. In this engaging new history, Brett L. Walker tackles key themes regarding Japan's relationships with its minorities, state and economic development, and the uses of science and medicine. The book begins by tracing the country's early history through archaeological remains, before proceeding to explore life in the imperial court, the rise of the samurai, civil conflict, encounters with Europe, and the advent of modernity and empire. Integrating the pageantry of a unique nation's history with today's environmental concerns, Walker's vibrant and accessible new narrative then follows Japan's ascension from the ashes of World War II into the thriving nation of today. It is a history for our times, posing important questions regarding how we should situate a nation's history in an age of environmental and climatological uncertainties.

Warburton's War: The Life of Maverick Ace Adrian Warburton, DSO, DFC, DFC (USA)

Description

Although Adrian Warburton (known to all as Warby) became one of the most highly decorated pilots of World War II, he began his military career as a below-average misfit with 22 Squadron of Coastal Command and was sent to Malta to avoid trouble in the UK. Known at first as a loner, when given his command, the spectacular results he achieved enabled his unconventional behavior to be over-looked. Fearless in the air, the maverick ace shot down nine enemy aircraft and won fame in Malta for his invaluable photo reconnaissance work at Taranto, Sicily and North Africa. On April 12th, 1944 Warburton departed in an aircraft on an unusual mission over Europe. Both plane and pilot disappeared without trace, giving rise to a host of rumors that his disappearance was intentional. For almost 60 years the mystery remained unsolved, until a painstaking international search unearthed the truth. Based on interviews with nearly 150 of Warby's colleagues, and updated by historian Chris Goss with recently unearthed information, Warburton's War paints a picture of a fascinating man, who with 350 operational missions from Malta alone became a living legend and an enigma among the aces of WWII.

I knew who whispered inside my head. Sabara. She was still here. Living inside my body. Taunting me. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina, overthrower of Queen Sabara's brutal regime, is now sovereign of Ludania. While seeking to bring equality to her previously divided country, Charlie also struggles to adjust to the responsibility thrust upon Warburton's War: The Life of Maverick Ace Adrian Warburton, DSO, DFC, DFC (USA) free epub her. Not everyone is happy with their new Queen - a burgeoning resistance to Charlie's rule is rapidly gaining momentum. And external enemies are not the only ones Charlie must contend with. Though it has been months since her demise, Sabara's influence is far from over. The evil queen's Essence has fused with Charlie's psyche and is viciously fighting to overpower her. Pushed to the brink of exhaustion, can Charlie perform her royal duties, combat Sabara's influence, and face an ultimate betrayal?

On a night of riding stars a young orphan squirrel is found abandoned on the beach. Urchin is raised on the island of Mistmantle, surrounded by the enchanted mists that protect the island from outside threats. A prophecy has been made in his name, but Urchin has no idea of this nor of what the future will bring. Anthony Burgess: A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange

Description

A vicious fifteen-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic. In Anthony Burgess's nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology. A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. When the state undertakes to reform Alex to "redeem" him, the novel asks, "At what cost?" This edition includes the controversial last chapter not published in the first edition and Burgess's introduction "A Clockwork Orange Resucked."

Kelly Cutrone has long been mentoring women on how to make it in one of the most competitive industries in the world. She has kicked people out of fashion shows, forced some of reality television's shiny stars to fire their friends, and built her own company—one of the most powerful PR firms in the fashion business—from the ground up. Through it all, she has refused to be anything but herself. Kelly writes in her trademark, no-bullshit style, combining personal and professional stories to share her secrets for success without selling out. Let's face it: this is a different world than the one in which our mothers grew up, and Kelly has created a real girl's guide to making it in today's world. Offering a wake-up call to women everywhere, she challenges us to stop the dogged pursuit of the "perfect life" and discover who we are and what we really want. Then she shows us how to go out there and get it. Much of our culture teaches us to muzzle our inner voice and follow the crowd; Kelly enables us to stop pretending and start truly living. With chapters on how to find your tribe (those like-minded souls who make A Clockwork Orange download ebook pdf your heart sing), how sometimes a breakdown is really a breakthrough, and how there is no such thing as perfection, Kelly also shares practical advice, such as how to create a personal brand and how sometimes you have to fake it to make it. Raw, hilarious, shocking, but always the honest truth, "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside" calls upon you to gather up your courage like an armful of clothes at a McQueen sample sale and follow your soul wherever it takes you. Whether you're just starting out in the world or looking to reinvent yourself, "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside" will be the spark you need to figure out what you have to say to the world—and how you're going to say it.

Leland M. Roth,Amanda C. Roth Clark: Understanding Architecture: Its Elements, History, and Meaning

Understanding Architecture: Its Elements, History, and Meaning

Description

This widely acclaimed, beautifully illustrated survey of Western architecture is now fully revised throughout, including essays on non-Western traditions. The expanded book vividly examines the structure, function, history, and meaning of architecture in ways that are both accessible and engaging. Significant features of the third edition include: * Increased global coverage, with new essays on Africa, Japan, China, India, Islamic architecture, and the architecture of the Americas. * A new chapter covering twenty-first century architecture. * Updated coverage of sustainable and green architecture and its impact on design. * Revised historical survey and expanded and illustrated timeline. * Thoroughly revised and expanded art program, including more than 650 black and white images--135 new to this edition, and more than 200 line art drawings created by author Leland Roth. A new 32-page, full color insert features more than 50 new color images. Understanding Architecture continues to be the only text in the field to examine architecture as a cultural phenomenon as well as an artistic and technological achievement with its straightforward, two-part structure: The Elements of Architecture and The History and Meaning of Architecture. Comprehensive and clearly written, Understanding Architecture is a classic survey of architecture.

Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn't understand people, but animals she gets--especially the bonobos. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she's ever Understanding Architecture: Its Elements, History, and Meaning download epub felt among humans ...until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter who braves the ever-present animal rights protesters outside the lab to see what's really going on inside. When an explosion rocks the lab, severely injuring Isabel and "liberating" the apes, John's human interest piece turns into the story of a lifetime, one he'll risk his career and his marriage to follow. Then a reality TV show, Ape House, featuring the missing apes debuts under mysterious circumstances, and it immediately becomes the biggest--and unlikeliest--phenomenon in the history of modern media. Ape House delivers great entertainment, but it also opens the animal world to us in ways few novels have done, securing Sara Gruen's place as a master storyteller who allows us to see ourselves as we never have before.
